$/sq in = current price ÷ primary cooking area — a sizing heuristic, not a quality score. Grills with no verified Amazon price are excluded from that metric. How we rank →

Gas vs charcoal vs pellet, decided by cooking style instead of hype — startup time, temperature ceilings, flavor, running costs, and the research-backed pick for each.

Why BTUs Don't Tell You Much: The Grill Spec Everyone Gets Wrong

BTU measures gas flow, not cooking power. Here's the heat-flux math (BTU per square inch) that normalizes it — and why even that number misleads without context.

How the Desk Works

A research desk, not a test kitchen.

GrillNotch doesn't claim to cook on every grill it ranks. The rankings are built from normalized specs, dated receipts, and channel-legitimacy checks — and every page shows its work.

Dated price receipts

Every price on GrillNotch carries the date we last checked it. Receipts go stale in the open — never silently.

Normalized specs

Manufacturer numbers, re-measured onto one scale: cooking area, BTU, weight, warranty — comparable across brands.

Honest channel routing

When Amazon is the wrong place to buy a grill, we say so and route you elsewhere — even though it costs us the commission.

The ranking method, in three steps.

Read the full methodology

1. Normalize the specs

Pull manufacturer spec sheets and re-key every grill onto the same fields, so a square inch or a BTU means the same thing across brands.

2. Date every price

Each price is a receipt with a check date attached. When it goes stale, the page shows the staleness instead of pretending it's live.

3. Rank the buying fit

Rank by use case, budget tier, and ownership tradeoffs. A bigger grill can still be the wrong buy — the ranking says why.

No paid rankings

Affiliate links never buy placement. Rankings lead with the specs, the receipts, and the tradeoffs — commission rates are not an input.

No testing theater

We don't stage hands-on photos or invent cook tests. When a claim rests on a manufacturer spec, it's labeled as a manufacturer spec.

Updated when data changes

New prices, spec revisions, recalls, and better competing grills can move a recommendation up or down — with the change dated on the page.

Receipts, not hype

Price moves and ranking changes, dated

When a price receipt moves or a ranking flips, you'll get the numbers, the date, and nothing else. No affiliate newsletters. No sponsored roundups.

Unsubscribe any time. No spam, no sales pitches.
